GST Mistakes That Could Cost Aussie Businesses Thousands

Bookkeeping

GST seems simple… until it isn’t.

We see behind the scenes of Aussie businesses every day. And most of the GST problems we fix? They start small. A missed box here. A wrong code there. But they can quickly turn into thousands of dollars lost (or owed).

Here are some of the most common GST mistakes we see:

💥 1. Claiming GST on purchases that don’t include GST Just because there’s an ABN on the invoice doesn’t mean GST was charged. No GST = no claim.

💥 2. Not registering when your turnover hits $75k If your business crosses the threshold and you’re not registered, the ATO can backdate the GST. Plus interest. Plus penalties.

💥 3. Claiming GST on personal expenses That Bunnings receipt? If it includes both tools and weekend gardening stuff, you need to split it out properly.

💥 4. Estimating your BAS Guessing or copying figures from last quarter won’t cut it. The ATO wants accurate data based on your actual accounts.

💥 5. Relying on software alone Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks… great tools, but only if set up correctly. One wrong tax code and the whole thing’s off.

If you’re not 100% confident your GST is right, that’s OK. You’re not alone. But this stuff does need attention before it snowballs.

We help business owners fix these issues every day. No judgement. No jargon. Just clean numbers and peace of mind.
